How To Let The Work (The Job, The Answer) Find You

What do you want to do next?”

A question that has plagued me over the last few years of my career. For a long time, I was happy where I was but in all honesty, unsure of where I was going. It was a tricky place to be, stuck in the “inbetween”. It led me to question if I was doing enough, if I was missing out on something else, and if there was something wrong if I didn’t know what the next job looked like.

The truth is, sometimes the inbetween is exactly where we’re meant to be. It’s in the inbetween where we get to test and try. Where we get to explore. Where we get to grow. In fact, if you’re willing to sit in the discomfort of the inbetween, you are more likely to find what is next for you as it will land right at your doorstep - if you’re open to it.

Being open to receiving what is meant for you puts your mind and soul in a different place:

It leads to less pressure and more ease.

By placing our focus on what could go right, our mindset shifts from limitation to possibility. From restriction to opportunity. From status quo to growth.

But isn’t it easier to focus on what could go wrong? To get so hung up on making the wrong choice, that we forget the present moment? When we get lost in the “choosing”, we miss the best choice:

Being right here, right now.

In fact, the biggest thing that gets in our way of making a decision is questioning if there is something better. A better job, a better employer, a better opportunity.

When we are focused on “something better” we don’t give the present moment a chance; we completely miss what the moment is offering. We question it. Doubt it. Wonder if it is enough. But the truth is, the present moment is always enough. It’s all we really ever have.

We are only sabotaging ourselves when we get caught up in there being “something better”. We block ourselves from the very opportunity that could be trying to find us, that could be our “what’s next”. This is the thinking that gets us caught and stuck in ruminating and as a result, ignoring what’s right in front of us. It leads to indecision and the inability to acknowledge what we are being offered right now.

The choice is yours.

The choice to be open to the moment, to receiving what is available to you, meant for you. It’s not about needing anything more than that. It’s being open to looking around the corner and willing to see what is there: a different approach, a different idea, a different decision. Test and try.

It’s better to test and learn than to never test at all.” - Adam Grant

Stand in choice. In testing. In trying. In the present moment.

There is nothing better than right now.

This moment.

You don’t need anything more.

And you never know what will find you while you’re here.
