The First Step In Having More Of What You Want In Your Life

What do you want?

If that question stumped you, you’re not alone. After all, when was the last time you slowed yourself down and asked: what do I want?

Not for someone else, but for yourself.

We spend so much of our lives hoping for more happiness, telling ourselves that once things slow down we’ll be happier. When we have time to think about it, we’ll find a way to be happy.

But what are you waiting for? What if you could start generating more happiness for yourself today?

It all starts by answering this simple question: What do you want?

Having a clear answer to this question is the foundation for creating your life.

Where you place your focus, you also place your time and attention. This in turn creates your thoughts which drive your behaviours and actions, ultimately leading you to create your reality.

What have you been putting your time and attention into lately? Where have you focused your energy? Is it on the things you want, or don’t want? Is it time to shift focus?

When you connect to what you want, it boosts happiness and your happiness lasts longer.

There is power in knowing what you want.

After all, we attract the things that we think about into our lives. Don’t you want to have more of what you want in your life?

While the question can be difficult to answer, you can start by giving yourself permission to focus on you. What is it that your heart desires? Not the things that you think you should want, or others want for you. Remember: you can’t want something for someone else or from someone else. Leave everyone else out of it.

This is all about you.

Give yourself permission right now to focus on what you want.

Through conversation, I’ve learned that people are hesitant to answer this question at first. And no wonder, it’s unfamiliar territory. Allow yourself to explore the corners of your mind, the depths of your soul, and stay open to the vulnerability that follows.

There’s no need to overcomplicate the process. Consider where things are already going well in your life:

Do you want more of that?

If not, where do you want more? Look to a domain of your life (ie. health, career, relationships…) and see what possibilities lie there.

If you find yourself falling back into what you wanted (past) instead of what you want (right now), start by completing the past. This will allow you to clear the path to what’s next. In feeling complete about the past, you have opened the door to what’s next and can lead from the present moment.

You’ll know you’ve found your answer when it feels good. Simple as that. If you can’t feel it, you can’t make it happen. It’s important that you feel connected to what you want: does it light you up, get you excited, do you notice a smile growing on your face, or your fingers tingling…? A goal without soul is flat.

A goal with soul is on fire.

Go a step further and take the time to know what you don’t want. Yes, we want to keep the narrative positive, but knowing what you don’t want can drive further clarity towards what you do want. This allows you to get laser focused - more specificity leads to more power.

Knowing what you want is the first step in creating your future. It might sound simple in theory, but it is powerful in practice. I challenge you to slow down, take the time to listen to your Self, your intuition. See what your soul has to say - there’s a good chance that there is a voice buried deep within that has been wanting to speak up for a long time.

What is it saying? What do you hear?
